My sister called me and told me she was now in Kyoto.  She and her family will be staying in Kyoto for the next 3 years.   The kids will go to a regular Japanese school.  I hope they can deal with the environment of Japanese school and have fun with their classmates.

She just sent me a picture of scenery right outside their yard.  Kamogawa river is right in front of their house!!  I was really impressed. I’ll be able to stay there for free and see the autumn leaves and cherry blossoms.  I’ve only been to Kyoto twice in my life so I hope I’ll be able to go there a lot more in the next 3 years.    I can’t wait!!

Today is Halloween!  When I first came to Japan, Halloween was not really popular and very few people knew about it.  These days it’s a major event in Japan.  When I was little, I put on a costume and went trick or treating.  For kids, Halloween is serious business.  We can get a lot of candies on that day so if you look at the faces of kids on Halloween, they are not smiling.  They mean business.  I remember my sister and I collected so many candies that we had to put all of the candies in a card board box.  I don’t remember but we probably ate all of it.

When we become High School students, we can’t go trick or treating anymore.  Instead, most High School students do something bad.  We drive by in our car and throw eggs at kids and houses.  I know it sounds terrible but it’s just what people do.  I know I did not throw eggs at kids because when I was a kid someone threw an egg at me and I felt terrible.

I think trick or treating is a great thing for the kids.  Kids will always remember the memory of getting lots of candies!!

mean business 「真剣である」

The kids mean business.

Saturday, November 4th

It’s already end of the year.  Time flies, doesn’t it?!  November and December usually get really busy because of Christmas parties, end of the year parties, writing New Year’s cards, and New Year’s cleaning.  This year, I decided to spend time with my sister’s family for Christmas.  She has just moved to Kyoto and she’s living in a really nice location in front of Kamogawa river.  Actually, last night I caught up with her over the phone and she told me to come to see the autumn leaves.  I’ve never been to Kyoto during the autumn leaves season so I decided to go.  She’ll be there for 3 years so it’s a chance for me to get to know Kyoto really well.   I can’t wait!!

Time flies 「

It’s already end of the year.  Time flies, doesn’t it.

I caught up with her over the phone.

get to know  「知る」

It’s a chance for me to get to know Kyoto really well.
