「自分に合っている」を英語で表現

「自分に合っている」は良く使う英語です。しかし、日本語の「合っている」は使用範囲がとても大きいです。

英語ではシーンによって使い分けが必要です。

何かの状況や物が自分に合っている

例えば、自分の「仕事、趣味、物、」が自分に合っていると表現したい場合は、

It suits me.  (自分に合っている)

It’s good for me. (自分に合っている)

と表現できます。

The class suits me.  

(この教室は自分に合っている。)

My current work is good for me.  

(現在の仕事は自分に合っている。)

That hat suits you.

(帽子はあなたにお似合いですよ。)

サイズが合っている

例えば、服を試着して自分にサイズが合っていると表現したい場合は、

“fit” を用います。

These shoes don’t fit me.  They’re too small.

(この靴はサイズが合わない。小さ過ぎる)

This jackets fits me well.  It’s just right. 

(このジャケットサイズが良い。ピッタリだ。)

相性が合う

例えば、「このチーズがワインと相性が合う」と表現したい場合には

This cheese goes well with wine. 

と表現します。

つまり、[A goes well with B] という形になります。

Your tie goes well with your shirt.

(あなたのネクタイがシャツと合っている。)

しかし、「私は旦那と相性が合う」と表現したい場合は、goes well withは使えません。

✖︎ – I go well with my husband.

もし、「私は旦那と相性が合う」と表現したい場合は、

My husband is good for me.

とか、

I get along with my husband.

と表現しましょう。

Thursday, November 7th.   “A new challenge”

Last weekend I started a new class at my school.  The curriculum name is called Bizlish.  It’s a made up name combining business and English.  The business part was taught by Ben Pwee and the English part will  be taught this week by me.  I think it’s really different from classes held at other schools.  What I mean is  business English in Japan is usually taught by ordinary English teachers who don’t have a lot of business experience or education.  A good example is that many  schools offered me to teach business even though I don’t have a business background.  

Bizlish is taught by Ben Pwee who has a business degree from Cambridge university.  Not only that, but he has 20 years of business experience as a consultant.  I was really impressed by the way he was able to take difficult business ideas and explain it so simply that even lower level students could understand it. I thought it was good for my students. Most students said it was easy to understand and they liked the course.  I was relieved to hear that.  

Now, it’s my turn to get students to learn business words and grammar.  Eventually, I will make all original learning material like I did with Willton and Masters.  My strength is to make materials that are suited to the needs of students.  

I think Ben’s strength and my strength mix well together.  I really want to expand this curriculum.  I hope big corporation will sign up for our class.

日記の訳

先週末、私の学校(名古屋の英会話マスターイングリッシュ)で新しいクラスが始まりました。クラスの名前はビズリッシュです。名前は造語で、ビジネスとイングリッシュをつなげました。ビジネスはベン・プウィーさんが教えています。英語は私が今週教えます。他の学校で提供しているビジネスクラスとは全く違うコースだと思います。どういう意味かというと、ビジネス英会話は普段ビジネス経験と知識があまりない講師によって教えられています。良い例は、私がビジネス経験が無いにも関わらず、多くの英会話学校からビジネスコースを教える依頼を受けるからです。

ビズリッシュは名門のケンブリッジ大学からビジネスを専攻したベンさんが教えます。それだけではなく、ベンさんは２０年間コンサルタントとして経験を持っています。彼がとても難しいビジネスアイデアをとてもシンプルでわかりやすく教えれることが凄いと思いました。まだレベルが低い生徒さん達でも理解できたと思います。ほとんどの生徒さん達が分かりやすくて、コースを好きだと言っていただきました。ホットしました。

今から、私がビジネス用語と文法を教えます。いずれは、ウィルトンとマスターと同様に全部オリジナル教材を作り上げます。私の強みは生徒にニーズに合った教材を作ることです。

ベンの強みと私の強みがうまく噛み合うと思います。このカリキュラムを拡げていきたいです。大手企業がこのコースに申し込んで欲しいです。

英会話のコツ

初心者の時には英単語がないため自分が言いたいことが言えないと感じることが多いと思います。そこで、話す時に言いたいことを極力単純にする必要があります。単語が足りない場合は、知っている単語で工夫をして話す必要があります。例えば、「お寺に礼拝に行きました」と言いたいけど、礼拝という単語が分からないとしましょう。そしたら、I vistied a temple と言い換えましょう。もし、visited という単語も出なければ、I went to a temple でもいいでしょう。難しい単語をたくさん知っているだけより、シンプルな単語で話せることの方が大切です。
